A plant such as epiphyllum is directly related to the cactus family. Under natural conditions, this plant can be found in tropical America, as well as in Mexico. Often, epiphyllums are also called phylloctacti, which means “leaf-shaped cactus”. This genus combines almost 20 plant species represented by epiphytes and shrubs with a leaf-like stem and a lignified base. The epiphyllum has no foliage; instead, there are flat and fairly wide shoots. Skeletal branches can have a trihedral or rounded shape. This plant is highly branched and fast growing. Young shoots are directed vertically upward, however, over time, they wilt. Such plants, due to their large, spectacular flowers, are also called "orchid cacti" by botanists. The first time a cactus blooms upon reaching the age of three. Pretty large flowers can have a length of up to 30 centimeters, and a diameter of up to 15 centimeters. The flowers have the shape of a funnel and a long flower tube. There are species whose fragrant flowers have a rather pleasant aroma.
At the moment, there are more than 10,000 varieties of such a plant, thanks to the efforts of flower growers.
Epiphyllum ackerman (Epiphyllum ackermannii)
This is a hybrid plant that has flowers painted in satin saturated red. This cactus is the most unpretentious of all species belonging to this genus.
Acute-epiphyllum (Epiphyllum oxypetalum)
This species is natural. The shoots of such a plant grow up to 200 centimeters in length and 12 centimeters in width. The blooming of snow-white fragrant flowers occurs at night.
Epifillum care at home
They love light very much. For placement, you need to choose well-lit places, but at the same time protected from direct sunlight (otherwise, a burn may appear on the shoots).
Resistant to heat. In winter, moderate temperatures ranging from 15 to 20 degrees are recommended. It should be noted that in the room where the epiphyllum is located, it should not be colder than 10 degrees, otherwise it may die.
How to water
Watering should be moderate, while it is imperative to pour accumulated liquid from the pan. In winter, watering is done only after the substrate is completely dry.
For normal growth and development of the plant requires high humidity. It is recommended to carry out systematic spraying of shoots, as well as their washing (for this a water jet of room temperature is used).
You need to transplant the plant 1 time per year, systematic pruning is carried out. In this pruning, shoots that are damaged, ugly or old, as well as those on which flower buds are not laid, are subject.
You can propagate by stem cuttings. This procedure is carried out in the spring and autumn. To do this, cut the side shoots and sharpen the end just above the narrow part of the stem (wedge-shaped). The cutlery is placed vertically and left in the open air for 5 or 6 days for drying. On cuttings, you need to choose shoots older than 1 year, but lignified old ones also do not fit. The formation of roots occurs very quickly, while water or a moistened substrate is used for rooting.
- Adult cactus does not bloom - improper care is provided. Transplant and systematically feed the plant.
- The plant drops buds - the conditions in which the epiphyllum is contained have changed dramatically. We must wait until it adapts.
