Video about Gelenium. There are many miracles in the world, but there are miracles in our flower garden, and now I will show you this miracle. Meet autumn gelenium! Well, you say, some kind of yellow daisy. But do not rush, I’ll tell you about this plant now, and why I call it a miracle plant: not only for beauty, but also for one more property.
Gelenium in the garden - video
It turns out that this plant dies, but not only the aboveground part dies, but the rhizome also dies. It happens every year. Both the mother stem and the root in the earth - everything perishes, nothing remains. Only a few buds remain at the root, not far from the surface of the earth. In the spring, this plant launches these buds, rosettes are formed again, this plant again resurrects, like a phoenix bird from nonexistence.
In my summer cottage, autumn gelenium has been growing for only one year. For me, it looks like a Christmas tree. Each twig ends with a magnificent flower, like a Christmas toy. Let’s lower our eyes, look, the bush grows directly from the ground. Clear straight branches extend across the entire surface of the mother stem. Each branch also branches, and each branch also has more than one flower, so we get a flowering column.
After 2-3 years, Gelenium will have to be divided. And you have to share it for 2 reasons. I have already said that renewal buds are laid on the mother plant. Next year, every daughter plant will again have kidneys, can you imagine what kind of communal apartment there is? Of course, the plant will be crowded - this is the first reason. And the second reason is that in order to build up such a mass that will bloom so abundantly, you need a lot of fertilizer.
Care for Gelenium

In order to get such a magnificent bush covered with flowers, very little effort must be made. Care is the most common: weeding, loosening, and most importantly, watering during the summer. He loves Gelenium infusion of herbal tea. Helen also loves potash fertilizer, the most affordable potash fertilizer is ash. It is she who I scatter under the roots. Sprinkle in August. Now it will already be fertilizing for plants that are only now emerging and being deposited on the main rhizome. You can pour any complex fertilizer that is at your fingertips. At my fingertips was Superphosphate. I added ash, superphosphate, that is, for the plant and potassium, and phosphorus is enough. And in the spring I will add urea .
Usually I don’t loosen the earth around gelenium, because the root system is quite superficial, I'm afraid to damage it. I found another way, simpler and helenium will like it too. I have 3-year-old cow dung, which has already been overdone, turned into humus, perfectly crumbling. I will fall asleep around the roots, so fertilizer will be under a layer of soil. And earthworms will make the earth loose and airy. I think this plant has enough nutrition. Thus, those kidneys that are established here will receive food, and will be covered for the winter. They will not be afraid of frost.
In order to prolong the bloom of helenium during the fall, - and it is valuable precisely because in the fall, tall and bright perennials have already blossomed, and helenium blooms in bloom - there is one small trick, a secret. In June, I could cut the top of the sprout by a few centimeters, in which case the rapid development of the side branches would begin, the flowering, however, would move for a week, but it would be even more magnificent. Take note.
Propagation of Gelenium
More about the reproduction of gelenium. If you decide to plant this plant in your summer cottage, you can buy a bag of seeds, and the imported seeds of the American and Japanese lines are very wonderful, look in our stores. You can divide the bush after 3, maximum 4 years. The bush must be divided. Not only because the soil beneath it is depleted and too many daughter buds become, but the fact is that the laying of these same buds is increasing along the stem, and sooner or later, by the 4th year of its growth in one place, the buds will be too high and can freeze in a frosty winter.
So, let's start with the seeds. Gelenium seeds are best sown in spring in greenhouse drawers, because then flowering occurs after a year. You can sow the seeds directly under the bush or in some kind of beds, but then the flowering is postponed for another year, but it will be an easy and affordable method that takes little of your working time. Usually all geleniums: Gelenium Benois, spring, hybrid, autumn - they manage to plant seeds, that is, you can get seeds at your summer cottage. How else they say - "bears fruit Gelenium." This common chamomile fades (now mid-August, they have not faded yet, but on the way to it), the middle begins to fluff and the seeds darken (now they are bright green), then you can start packing seeds in order to sow them in spring. You can sow in the fall, but in this case, more seeds will be needed. I would sow in the spring.
I want to return once again to the reproduction of Gelenium by rhizomes. In our strip, you can divide both in autumn and spring. But nevertheless, it seems to me that it is better to divide the gelenium in our strip in the spring, because in the first half of the summer, when a tiny twig was brought to me, literally by chance she moved away from the mother bush, she remarkably took root.
Gelenium in the garden
Gelenium in the landscape of your site. Unfortunately, our plots with you are very small, and the garden houses of our neighbors, and our sheds that I would like to hide, alas, cannot be hidden by any plants. Or maybe you don’t need to hide them? There is simply such a method when you need to shift the viewer's eyes to some bright spot. Then the viewer may simply not notice the elephant in the china shop, say: “But I did not see the walls of this house, I saw only this bright, beautifully blooming bush.” So gelenium is just such a bright spot. And of course, an autumn bouquet without gelenium is simply impossible. Consider only one thing: gelenium needs to be torn off only already in a dissolved state, I mean - the flower should bloom completely. If you rip off the bud, Gelenium will not bloom in your vase.
That's all for today. I think - you believe that this plant is able to be reborn from nothingness, like a phoenix bird.
